Yessori (Sound of the Past), February 2-4, 2017, Kronos Festival
SFJAZZ Center, San Francisco, CA
“Yessori” means “Sound from the Past” in Korean. When I first played haegeum for David Harrington he told me it has a very ancient sound, and commissioned me to write a piece that explores aspects of Korean music.
The first time I heard Korean traditional music, the pitch relationships and fluid nature of the rhythmic cycles felt chaotic, as I had initially studied western music. However, over the past two decades of playing haegeum, I came to love these unique qualities and am excited to share them through “Yessori.”
My compositional process began with improvisations on the haegeum in the style of traditional Korean music. I then adapted the distinctive techniques, such as vibrato and rhythmic articulations, for string quartet.
